Different Paths, Same Finish Line

Updated: Apr 16

There is no single path to earning a GED.

For some, the journey is quick, while for others it takes time. Some step away and return when they are ready, and others continue forward while balancing work, family, and life’s unexpected challenges along the way.

Every story looks different, but they all share something in common. The decision to keep going.

At WAYS for Life, we have the privilege of walking alongside young people as they take that step, sometimes more than once, and supporting them as they turn persistence into progress. This month, we are proud to celebrate a group of graduates whose journeys reflect both the challenges they’ve faced and the strength it takes to overcome them.

Sarah’s Story

When Sarah joined the GED FastTrack program, she came in with clear goals and a quiet determination to reach them. Even with limited testing opportunities during the holidays, she stayed focused and moved steadily through the program, completing her GED in a short amount of time.

Along the way, Sarah embraced more than just academic support. She participated in life skills and mental health

groups, building confidence and strengthening her foundation for what comes next. Now, she is exploring college opportunities and continuing to move forward with intention.

Her journey is a reminder that when readiness meets the right support, meaningful progress can happen quickly.

Isabella’s Story

Isabella’s journey was not linear.

She first joined the GED FastTrack program in 2022 and quickly passed multiple sections, showing early on that she had both the ability and determination to succeed. But personal challenges interrupted her progress, and for a time, finishing felt out of reach.

Still, her story didn’t end there.

Isabella returned to the program while working full-time, balancing the demands of her job with the commitment it takes to study and prepare for her final test. It wasn’t always easy, but she stayed with it, continuing to move forward even on the hard days.

At WAYS, Isabella found an environment that met her where she was, offering both structure and flexibility, along with the understanding and support she needed to keep going.

When she passed her final test, it marked more than the completion of a program. It was the result of persistence, growth, and a decision to keep showing up for herself. Today, she is continuing to build toward greater independence and exploring what comes next, including opportunities for further education.

Her story is a reminder that progress does not have to be perfect to be meaningful, and that finishing, no matter how long it takes, is something to be proud of.

Morgan’s Story

Morgan came to WAYS looking for something different, a place where he could continue his education while also feeling seen and supported for who he is.

Traditional school had not been the right fit, but within a more flexible and encouraging environment, Morgan found the space to grow. As he worked toward his GED, he also began exploring his interests, particularly in theater, design, and creative expression. Now, with his GED completed, Morgan is looking ahead to opportunities that align with his passions, including further education and hands-on experiences in costume design.

His journey is a reminder that success is not just about completing a program. It is about discovering where you belong and building a future that reflects who you are.

Jacob’s Story

After the loss of his mother, Jacob stepped away from school and needed time to process and reset. When he came to WAYS, he started quietly, attending evening tutoring sessions and focusing on one step at a time.

That steady, intentional approach became the foundation of his success. He earned his

GED, then shifted his focus to earning his permit, and then to finding a job. Each step built upon the last, creating a sense of stability and forward movement.

Jacob’s journey is not defined by speed, but by consistency. It is a powerful example of how progress and healing can happen together when someone is given the space and support to move at their own pace.

Shawnquaniece’s Story

Shawnquaniece’s path to earning her GED was filled with interruptions, but never a lack of determination.

She began the GED FastTrack program in 2023, but along the way faced significant life challenges, including growing her family, recovering from a car accident, balancing work, and navigating transportation barriers. At multiple points, her journey paused, but she continued to return, each time ready to try again.

What ultimately made the difference was consistent, personalized support. With a mentor walking alongside her and a tutor helping her focus on small, manageable steps, she began to rebuild momentum. Even on the busiest days, she committed to moving forward, sometimes completing just one math problem at a time.

Those small steps added up. She graduated while raising her children and working as a home health aide, and she is now looking ahead to continuing her education in the medical field. Her story is a powerful reminder that persistence does not have to be perfect to lead to success.

Brennan’s Story

When Brennan joined WAYS, he came in with a clear focus: earn his GED and move forward.

He approached the program with independence and determination, quickly working through the material while balancing full-time employment. His time in the program may have been shorter than others, but it was purposeful.

Now, Brennan is continuing to build stability in his life, working, planning to earn his driver’s license,

and thinking about what comes next. With the support of those around him, he is creating a path that reflects both his independence and his potential.

His story is a reminder that growth can take many forms, and sometimes it looks like quietly putting one piece of life into place after another.

It Doesn’t Happen Alone

While each journey is unique, one truth remains constant. No one reaches the finish line alone. Every graduate’s path looks different. Some move quickly, while others take time. Some balance work or family. Others navigate setbacks, pauses, and fresh starts. That’s why support cannot be one-size-fits-all. It has to be designed around the individual, meeting each young person where they are and walking with them toward where they want to go.

That kind of support is only possible through community.

Behind every graduate is a network of people who make their success possible. Tutors who show up consistently. Mentors who offer encouragement and accountability. Life skills and mental health support that strengthen confidence and resilience. Partners and collaborators who expand what’s possible. A community that continues to believe in them, even on the days they struggle to believe in themselves. Sometimes that support is structured and visible. Other times, it is quiet and steady. But in every case, it is essential.

The GED is the milestone. The support system is what makes it possible.

There are more young people just like these graduates, capable, determined, and ready for a second chance, but facing barriers they cannot overcome alone. Because of you, they don’t have to.

When you support WAYS for Life, you help create the consistency, encouragement, and opportunity that turns persistence into progress. You help ensure that when a young person decides to try again, someone is there to meet them with the support they need to keep going.

And ultimately, you help them cross the finish line.
