What We Do
Legal Services

We offer limited legal services and do not provide direct representation in these areas of practice. Litigation matters and matters needing direct representation in these areas are handled by the public defender/conflict counsel for criminal law, legal aid for family law, or referred to other outside counsel. Legal Support in Action: A Member's Story
During a mental health crisis in 2022, *Mary was arrested for serious felony charges for entering her neighbor’s apartment without permission even though she did not take anything from the neighbor or hurt the neighbor. The charges could have been punishable by up to life in prison. WAYS immediately stepped in to ensure that Mary was not detained in jail, that Mary was relocated to avoid any further contact or issues with the alleged victim, and that Mary received vital medication and weekly therapy to stabilize the mental health issue. WAYS was also able to identify a local private attorney, Eric Wicks, who agreed to take Mary’s case pro bono. After a great deal of hard work by both WAYS staff attorneys and Mr. Wicks, the State Attorney finally agreed to drop the charges on 12/13/2024, freeing Mary from the threat of incarceration. Today, over 2 years later, Mary has stable housing, stable medication, consistent weekly mental health therapy, disability benefits for the mental health condition that resulted in the incident, and enrollment in Vocational Rehabilitation to help Mary secure part-time employment.
