What Happens When Support Never Stops

How Wraparound Support Helped Bella Build Stability and Opportunity

When Bella first connected with WAYS for Life, she was navigating more responsibility than most young people her age.

After losing both of her parents and experiencing years of instability within the foster care system, she was facing adulthood without the consistent support many rely on to build their future. Just before turning sixteen, Bella discovered she was pregnant. That moment changed everything.

As she later shared with supporters at the Canopy of Hope Gala:

“For the first time, I wasn’t just thinking about surviving. I was thinking about building something better.”

She wanted stability. She wanted education. She wanted a future that looked different for her daughter.

Through WAYS for Life, she found the kind of support that could make that possible.

Removing Barriers Through Education

Bella entered the WAYS GED FastTrack Program determined to complete her education quickly so she could provide for her child. At the time, earning a GED as a minor required navigating several barriers including testing requirements, coursework, and district approval.

WAYS helped remove those barriers by providing transportation to classes, tutoring, and covering the cost of testing so Bella could focus on learning and preparing for her future.

Reflecting on that support, Bella said:

“They didn’t just tell me I could move forward. They made it possible.”

With that support in place, she earned her GED in just two months!

Building Independence Through Life Skills

Education was only one piece of the journey. Through the LiftUp Life Skills program, Bella attended weekly classes while caring for her baby and continuing to work toward independence.

During that time, she earned a laptop and reliable transportation. WAYS helped her purchase a safe vehicle, provided driving lessons, and assisted with registration and other necessary costs so transportation would not stand in the way of opportunity.

For Bella, these were not simply resources. They were investments in stability.

Advocacy and Stability

Legal advocacy also played an important role in Bella’s journey. At one point, benefits meant to support her during foster care were being withheld. With support from WAYS legal services, she was able to regain access to those funds, providing critical stability for herself and her daughter.

This advocacy helped ensure she had the foundation needed to continue moving forward.

Turning Stability Into Opportunity

With stability in place, Bella was able to pursue meaningful work and long term goals.

She worked for several years as a preschool teacher and recently became a Registered Behavior Technician working with children with autism. At the same time, she is attending Eastern Florida State College as she pursues a career in mental health counseling.

Her goal is to continue her education and eventually earn a master’s degree so she can help others navigate trauma, healing, and personal growth.

The Power of Wraparound Support

Bella’s story shows what happens when support is consistent and connected.

Transportation allowed her to attend classes. Education opened the door to employment. Life skills built confidence. Legal advocacy protected her access to resources. Career guidance helped her move toward meaningful work.

Each piece strengthened the others.

As Bella shared during her Gala remarks:

“Because of WAYS’ continuous support, I was able to move from survival into building a future.”

Today she is raising her daughter, working full time, attending college, and maintaining stable housing. What once felt uncertain has become a life built on consistency and possibility.

Looking Forward

Bella’s journey continues to grow. She hopes one day to mentor other young people navigating foster care and early adulthood because she understands firsthand how powerful encouragement and opportunity can be.

As she told the audience at the Gala:

“With the right tools, guidance, and advocacy, young people don’t just overcome challenges. They become stable, successful, contributing members of their communities.”

Her story is a powerful reminder that when a community shows up consistently, young people are able to build futures that reach far beyond the challenges they once faced.
